General

Which water repellent do you recommend?

After extensive research we decided to offer what we feel is the best water repellent available – Organowood. More details can be found on our wood treatments page.

What is the difference in usage between furniture grade redwood and commonly used CLS?

CLS is primarily produced for 1st fix construction work such as stud partition walls while redwood is a 2nd fix timber ideal for indoor joinery and various outdoor projects due to its tights, straight grain & weather resistant properties. The most common outdoor uses for redwood are Decking boards and Outdoor wooden furniture.

What is pressure treated wood?

During the treatment process pressure and vacuum technology are used to force protective chemical preservatives into the timber. This renders it a sturdier material that is less susceptible to rot, fungal decay and insects.

I want to add a stain, paint or varnish to my furniture will the pressure treatment affect this?

Not at all, the timber will accept finishes really well.

How does the price compare between CLS and redwood?

Due to the higher quality of our Swedish redwood, this material is significantly more expensive than CLS, but this is reflected in the extended lifetime and superior look of the finished products.

How does redwood differ in looks from CLS?

CLS has a white to light yellow appearance. It is typically planed to a level which is safe for the tradesman to work. The dimensions of stock CLS tend to run at 38mm X 88mm. Redwood has a light, reddish brown colour. Furniture graded redwood is planed to a smooth to the touch finish. Our redwood is sized to a chunky 44mm x 94mm finish.

Do your garden tables come with a parasol hole?

Yes. All of our picnic tables & Dining table’s & coffee tables come with a 40mm Parasol hole as standard. Our children’s picnic tables & loveseat tables come with a 32mm hole as standard.

Do I need to apply further treatment to your products?

The pressure treatment protects against rot and decay, however we do always recommend further treatment. Applying a water repellent to work alongside the pressure treatment will carry a range of benefits. Reduced swelling and shrinking – Natural timber is always looking to acquire equilibrium between the moisture in the air and the moisture within the timber itself. Left un-treated the timber will be susceptible to rapidly absorbing or expelling water. A water repellent will help to regulate this process and avoid excessive movement, cracking and splitting from occurring. Barrier – A water repellent will provide a barrier to the surface of the timber which will help prevent stains from drink spills. It will also make for an easier surface to clean down. Quick drying – Water will simply run off the timber making it usable within minutes of a downpour.

Can redwood be treated?

CLS is naturally resistant to treatment. Redwood easily absorbs treatment.

Can I request that my furniture has a different sized hole or no hole?

Yes. We make our furniture to order so we can offer a custom solution here. We are however limited to only offering a 32mm, 40mm & 50mm. Of course if you would prefer no parasol hole we can leave this out totally

Log Stores

Does a log store need doors?

Doors are not required for a wooden log store. While they would offer additional protection against the elements, they are not completely necessary as they may in fact hinder the air circulation needed to dry the wood you store.

Why do log stores have gaps at the back?

The gaps at the back of log stores helps to facilitate airflow and circulation which is crucial for drying the wood. Proper ventilation helps to prevent the buildup of moisture, reducing the risk of mould and rot.

Do log stores keep wood dry?

The purpose of a log store is to keep your wood dry. The roof and wall panels will shield your logs from rain, snow and other weather elements, whilst the integrated slats or gaps will facilitate airflow which helps to dry your woof and prevent the growth of mould.

How should you stack logs in a log store?

Logs should be stacked in a manner that promoted air circulation. The best way to do so is by placing the logs with the cut ends facing outwards and then stacking them in rows, whilst leaving some space between each log. Avoid stacking logs directly against the walls of the store; instead, leave a small gap to allow air to flow around the entire pile. It's also a good idea to stack the logs on a raised platform or pallet to keep them off the ground and prevent moisture absorption from the soil.

To find out more on how to properly stack logs in a log store, we recommend having a read of our article which discusses the optimal stacking processes.

How can I protect my log store from the weather?

Applying a weather-resistant wood treatment or wood preservative can help protect your log store from the elements. Additionally, placing the store in a sheltered location, such as against a wall or under an overhang, can provide extra protection.

Do you need planning permission for a log store?

In most instances you will not require planning permission to build or setup a pre-built log store, especially one that is small in size and is a standalone structure in your garden. However, in some cases local regulations can be slightly stricter, so we recommend checking with your local planning authority in order to ensure compliance with any specific rules or restrictions in your area.

Can a log store be used for other purposes?

Yes, a log store can also be used for storing garden tools, equipment or even as a general outdoor storage solution. However, its primary design is optimised for log storage and drying.

Outdoor Dining Sets

What is the best material for outdoor dining sets?

The best material for outdoor dining sets depends on a variety of factors. Here at MG Timber, we use a unique softwood known as Swedish Redwood. In addition to this timber featuring an elegant reddish-brown tint that adds class to any furniture set, redwood pines produce natural chemicals that offer for, weather and insect-resistance.

We select redwood trees grown in Sweden due to the fact their low temperatures and high-altitude mountain ranges produce denser and more durable timbers that resist twisting and warping, while maintaining that rich colour.

Can you leave wooden dining furniture outside all year?

Our wooden outdoor dining sets are pressure treated to ensure the elements pose little threat to your furniture. This means you can leave your furniture outside all year round if you so desire, and you can rest assured that rainfall and insects won’t cause to many issues.

If you do have any queries on the proper storage practices of your wooden garden furniture then we recommend having a read of our article on the subject which you can find in our Knowledge Base.

Can you put a dining set on grass?

Placing your wooden furniture on a grass lawn won’t cause many problems for your timber chairs and tables. However, there is the chance that the grass it rests on will be damaged over time due to the extended pressure it’s faced with and its inability to be exposed to sunlight.

This is why many people opt to place their furniture on some sort of layered material such as a rubber mat or outdoor rug. This prevents your dining set from coming into direct contact with your grass lawn, while also helping to more evenly disperse weight against the floor surface.

Do your garden tables come with a parasol hole?

Yes. All of our picnic tables & Dining table’s & coffee tables come with a 40mm Parasol hole as standard. Our children’s picnic tables & loveseat tables come with a 32mm hole as standard.

Will you have to assemble your new outdoor dining set yourself?

No, all our garden furniture sets come readily assembled for your convenience, which means all you have to do is pick out the perfect outdoor spot for your new seating area.
